Disabling Pop-up Blocking Software for Blackboard Sessions

In order to use the discussion board and other features of Blackboard, users must configure any pop-up blocking software they are using to allow pop-ups.

Disabling pop-ups in Internet Explorer

To allow pop-ups for the Blackboard features in Internet Explorer, take the following steps:

  1. Bring up the Tools menu, point to Pop-up Blocker and click on Pop-up Blocker Settings.
  2. In the Address of Web Site to Allow box, paste the following URL: http://bb.gcc.mass.edu
  3. Click Add.

Disabling pop-up blockers in Netscape 7 and Mozilla 1.7

To allow pop-ups for the Blackboard chat and co-browse features in Netscape 7 or Mozilla 1.7, take the following steps:

  1. Bring up the Edit menu and select preferences.
  2. Expand the Privacy & Security category and select Popup Windows.
  3. Click the Allowed Sites button.
  4. In the Allow popups from the following web sites box, paste the following URL: http://bb.gcc.mass.edu
  5. Click Add, and click OK.

Disabling pop-ups in Firefox

To allow pop-ups for the Blackboard chat and co-browse features in Firefox, take the following steps:

  1. Bring up the Tools menu and select Options.
  2. Select the Web Features category on the left.
  3. Click the Allowed Sites button next to the line that reads Block Popup Windows.
  4. In the Address of Web Site box, paste the following URL: http://bb.gcc.mass.edu
  5. Click the Allow button, and click OK twice.

Disabling pop-ups in Opera

To allow pop-ups for the Blackboard chat and co-browse features in Opera, take the following steps:

  1. Bring up the Tools menu and select preferences.
  2. Select the Windows category on the left side of the screen.
  3. From the Pop-ups drop down menu, select Open all pop-ups and click on the OK button.
  4. After you are finished with your Blackboard session, you will need to a reset your preferences to continue blocking pop-ups.

Disabling pop-ups in Safari

To allow pop-ups for the Blackboard chat and co-browse features in Safari, choose Block Pop-up Windows from the Safari menu so that there is no checkmark that appears next to it. After you are finished with your Blackboard session, you will need to change this setting back to continue blocking pop-ups.

 


Internet Explorer 5 and above

  1. Select Internet Options from the Tools menu.

  2. In Internet Options dialog box select the Security tab.

  3. Click the Custom Level... button. The Security Settings dialog box will pop up.

  4. Under Scripting category enable Active scripting.

  5. Click OK twice to close out.

  6. Click Refresh.

  7. Internet Explorer 5.X for Mac OS X

  8. Select Preferences from the Explorer menu.

  9. Click the arrow next to Web Browser.

  10. Click Web Content.

  11. Under Active Content check Enable Scripting.

  12. Click OK.

  13. Click Refresh.

  14. Internet Explorer 5 for Mac OS 9

  15. Select Preferences from the Edit menu.

  16. Click the arrow next to Web Browser.

  17. Click Web Content.

  18. Under Active Content check Enable Scripting.

  19. Click OK.

  20. Click Refresh.

  21. Internet Explorer 4.X

  22. Select Internet Options from the View menu.

  23. Click the Security tab.

  24. Click Custom.

  25. Click Settings.

  26. Scroll down to locate Scripting.

  27. Click Enable for Active Scripting.

  28. Click OK.

Netscape 7.X

  1. Select Preferences from the Edit menu.

  2. Click the arrow next to Advanced.

  3. Click Scripts & Plugins.

  4. Check Navigator beneath "Enable Javascript for".

  5. Click OK.

  6. Click Reload.

  7. Netscape 6.X

  8. Select Preferences from the Edit menu.

  9. Click Advanced

  10. Check Enable JavaScript for Navigator

  11. Click OK.

  12. Click Reload.

  13. Netscape 4.X

  14. Select Preferences from the Edit menu.

  15. Click Advanced.

  16. Check Enable JavaScript

  17. Check Enable style sheets

  18. Click OK.

  19. Click Reload.

  20. Netscape 4.X for Mac OS 9

  21. Select Preferences from the Edit menu.

  22. Click Advanced.

Opera 7.X

  1. Select Quick Preferences from the File menu.

  2. Make sure Enable JavaScript is checked.

  3. Click Reload.


Safari for Mac OS X

  1. Select Preferences from the Safari menu.

  2. Click Security.

  3. Check Enable JavaScript.

  4. Close the window.

  5. Click Reload.


Mozilla 1.X

  1. Select Preferences from the Edit menu.

  2. Click the arrow next to Advanced.

  3. Click Scripts & Plugins.

  4. Check Navigator beneath "Enable Javascript for".

  5. Click OK.

  6. Click Reload.


Firefox 0.9.X

  1. Select Options from the Tools menu.

  2. Click the Web Features icon.

  3. Check "Enable JavaScript".

  4. Click OK.

  5. Click Reload.


AOL 7.0 and above

  1. Select Preferences from the Settings menu.

  2. Click Internet Properties (WWW) under Organization.

  3. Click the Security tab.

  4. Check the Custom Level button.

  5. Scroll down to locate Scripting.

  6. For Active Scripting click Enable.

  7. Click OK, and then OK again to close all dialogs.

  8. Close the Preferences window, and then Reload the page.


    Internet Explorer 6.x:
  1. In Internet Explorer click on "Tools" at the top of the window.
  2. Select "Internet Options".
  3. Click on the "Privacy" tab.
  4. In the center of the "Privacy" tab screen, there should be an "Advanced" button. Click this button.
  5. Ensure that "Override automatic cookie handling" is checked.
  6. First and Third party cookies should be set to "Accept"
  7. Check "Always allow session cookies"
  8. Click on "OK"
  9. Exit Internet Explorer and restart your browser
  10. Internet Explorer 5.x (Windows):
  11. From the Tools menu, click [Internet Options].
  12. Click the [Security] tab.
  13. Click the [Custom Level] button.
  14. Click on the "Advanced" button
  15. Scroll down through the window to locate the Cookie Section. Internet Explorer 5 contains two separate locations where cookies are changed:

       Allow Cookies that are stored on your computer.
       Allow per-session Cookies, not stored.
  16. Enable your cookies at each location.
  17. Click [OK].
  18. Exit Internet Explorer and restart your browser
  19. Internet Explorer 5.x (Macintosh):
  20. Click Edit
  21. Select Preferences
  22. Under the Receiving Files option, select Cookies
  23. Under "When receiving cookies:" select the desired level of cookie acceptance
  24. Click OK to finish
  25. Internet Explorer 4.x:
  26. Click on VIEW.
  27. Go to INTERNET OPTIONS.
  28. Click Security tab.
  29. Click on Custom Level.
  30. Scroll Down to COOKIES.
  31. "Enable Cookies" should be selected.
  32. Click OK to exit

Netscape Navigator
  1. Click Edit on the Toolbar.
  2. Click Preferences
  3. Click the Privacy and Security category; expand the list to show the subcategories.
  4. Click Cookies
  5. Three options are displayed. Do the following:
    • Check "Enable all cookies"
  6. If you want to be notified when a web site tries to set a cookie, select "Warn me before accepting a cookie."
  7. Netscape Navigator 6.x
  8. Click Edit on the Toolbar.
  9. Click Preferences
  10. Click the Privacy and Security category; expand the list to show the subcategories.
  11. Click Cookies
  12. Three options are displayed. Click the appropriate choice: Do the following:
    • Check "Enable all cookies"
  13. If you want to be notified when a web site tries to set a cookie, select "Warn me before accepting a cookie."
  14. Netscape Navigator 4.x
  15. Click on Edit, and then click Preferences
  16. Click on the Advanced
  17. In the Cookies section, select Accept all cookies
  18. Click OK
  19. Netscape Navigator 3.x
  20. Go to Options on the menu bar
  21. Pick Network Preferences
  22. Click the Languages tab
  23. Click the checkbox next to "Enable Java"
  24. Click OK

AOL

NOTE: If the changes below do not work for you, please minimize the AOL Browser and open and use a SEPARATE browser like Internet Explorer or Netscape.

Properly Enabling Cookies on AOL 9.0:
  1. Click on the AOL "Settings" icon near the top of your AOL window.
  2. In the "Essentials" section, click on "Internet [Web] Options"
  3. Click on the "Privacy" tab.
  4. Click on the "Advanced" button
  5. Ensure that "Override automatic cookie handling" is checked.
  6. First and Third party cookies should be set to "Accept"
  7. Check "Always allow session cookies"
  8. Click on "OK"
  9. Click "Apply" and then "OK"
  10. Exit AOL and restart your computer (This step is important. Do not skip.)
  11. Properly Enabling Cookies on AOL 8.0:
  12. Click on the AOL "Settings" icon near the top of your AOL window.
  13. In the dropdown that appears, select "Preferences".
  14. Click the "By Category" tab
  15. Find "Internet" in the listings.
  16. Click on the "Privacy" tab.
  17. Click on the "Advanced" button.
  18. Ensure that "Override automatic cookie handling" is checked.
  19. First and Third party cookies should be set to "Accept"
  20. Check "Always allow session cookies"
  21. Click on "OK"
  22. Click "Apply" and then "OK"
  23. Exit AOL and restart your computer (This step is important. Do not skip.)
  24. Enable Cookies on AOL (v6.0) for WINDOWS:
  25. Click on MY AOL.
  26. Click SETTINGS on the main toolbar.
  27. Click PREFERENCES.
  28. Click on Internet Properties (WWW).
  29. Click on the SECURITY tab.
  30. Click on the INTERNET ZONE, then click on the Custom button on the bottom of the window. The Security Settings window will appear.
  31. Scroll down until you see Cookies.
  32. Click Enable for the Allow per-session cookies option.
  33. Click OK to exit.
  34. Enable Cookies on AOL (v5.0) for WINDOWS:
  35. Click on MY AOL on the main toolbar.
  36. Click PREFERENCES.
  37. Click on WWW.
  38. Click on the SECURITY tab.
  39. Click on the INTERNET ZONE, then click on the Custom button on the bottom of the window. The Security Settings window will appear.
  40. Scroll down until you see Cookies.
  41. Click Enable for the Allow per-session cookies option.
  42. Click OK to exit.
  43. Enable Cookies on AOL (v4.0) for WINDOWS:
  44. Click on START MENU from desktop
  45. Click on SETTINGS, then CONTROL PANEL
  46. Click on the INTERNET icon.
  47. Click the ADVANCED tab and scroll down until you see the word COOKIES.
  48. Click on ALWAYS ACCEPT COOKIES.
  49. Click on APPLY and then OK to exit.
  50. Enable Cookies on AOL (v3.x) for WINDOWS or (v4.x) for MACINTOSH:
  51. Click on MEMBERS or MY AOL.
  52. Click PREFERENCES.
  53. Click on WWW or WEB.
  54. Click on ADVANCED TAB and scroll down until you see the word COOKIES.
  55. ENABLED should be selected.
  56. Click OK to exit.
  57. Enable Cookies on AOL (v3.x) for MACINTOSH:
  58. Cookies are NOT available through v3.x for Mac. AOL recommends upgrading to AOL 5.0.

Opera

Opera 7.11
  1. From the File menu, choose Preferences.
  2. Click the Privacy category.
  3. Check Enable Cookies.
  4. From the Normal Cookies drop-down menu, select Automatically accept all cookies.
  5. From the Third Part drop-down menu, select Automatically accept all cookies.
  6. Click OK.

    Mozilla
  7. Go to Edit on top of browser
  8. Choose Preferences on bottom of list
  9. Open the Privacy & Security menu on left hand side of box.
  10. On right hand side of box choose "Enable all cookies"
  11. Press OK

  13. Select Tools | Options... from the main menu.
  14. Select Privacy from the left panel of options.
  15. Expand the Cookies options on the right.
  16. Select "Enable Cookies."
  17. Select "for the originating website only."
