In October 2003, BCC and GCC became recipients of a Title III Part A Cooperative grant to improve student access and retention for placebound and other at risk students at each College. Each institution is making significant changes in the area of information technology infrastructure, faculty development, and student online services in order to reach this goal.

Grant Title: "A Cooperative On-Line Learning Network for Rural, Placebound Students"

Grant Total: $1,780,947 over five years (Oct 2003 - Sep 2008)

The purpose of the Title III Part A "Strengthening Institutions" Program is to "assist eligible institutions of higher education to become self-sufficient by providing funds to improve and strengthen their academic quality, institutional management, and fiscal stability."

Berkshire and Greenfield Community Colleges have a shared need for improved student outreach, access, and retention through enhanced distance learning and online advisement services options. Both Colleges serve rural, placebound student populations who can become "at risk" students due to economic or other reasons. Title III support seeks to bring more access to students through online distance learning options, so that degree programs and transfer credits can be earned anytime, anyplace.
