Flappers and Jazz I believe marks the Roaring Twenties time period too. When someone asks me what represents this time period. The fashion, music, and parties often come to mind. I agree the Great Gatsby was a great movie that depicted this time period. Also, the Harlem Renaissance period was definitely a time were African Americans could share their culture and who they were through their art, music, poetry, and music. This was the start to the Civil Movement to come. Exploring this part of history has always been an inspiring and beautiful part.
The Buck v. Bell case was very disturbing to me. Eugenics should have never been a thing. How on unethical, immoral, and wrong! My older daughter was listening to me read though this resource and my 14 year old was disgusted that government and the courts allowed this to happen to so many women. Especially, to women who were possibly mentally ill, poor, African American, or didn't live a typical lifestyle during that time. The thought that woman were given hysterectomies when they were going in to get their appendix out was horrific. The south medical schools performing unnecessary hysterectomies on African Americans was just so mind boggling. Also, the fact that they did this to children was even more disturbing.
The Billie Holiday story was news to me. They not only used her as an example on the War against drugs but they silenced her. They did not want her singing, Strange Fruit, as it showed the awful violence and lynching that was happening. It was a song people heard and listen to because she was such an inspirational voice to many. Her childhood and addiction issues were so disturbing and the fact that our government targeted her was even worse.
