World War II changed life at home in many big ways. Many men went off to fight, so women started working in factories and other jobs to help the war effort, this was a big change for gender roles. People had to ration food, gas, and other supplies, meaning they could only buy a small amount. Families planted "victory gardens" to grow their own food. The government used posters and radio to keep people informed and to build support for the war. There was also fear and racism, Japanese Americans were taken from their homes and put in internment camps, even though they had done nothing wrong. Overall, the war brought people together to support the country, but it also showed the unfair treatment some groups faced.
