A focus on the Harlem Renaissance that focuses on the forgotten gay and lesbian contributions to arts and how they challenged race, gender, class, and sexual orientation. Thesis: queer contributions to the arts and performances advanced reception of these communities.
I will be using stories, primary sources, and historian reviews of the Harlem Rennaissance to explore how newly free African Americans created the culture around drag and developed the spaces for queer people in the United States.
