The impact of various social movements, including the Civil Rights Movement, Women's Rights Movement, Disability Rights Movement, and Native American activism, in highlighting societal inequalities related to race, gender, disability, and other marginalized groups led to enormous changes in the perspective of our generation. Despite opposition and government suppression, these movements led to significant legislative changes, such as the Rehabilitation Act, and contributed to shifts in public attitudes and policies regarding inequality. The government often responded to these movements with surveillance and attempts to co-opt their efforts. I will add that social movements since the 1960s have made important progress toward fairness and justice. However, the broader focus, influence of technology, changing social dynamics, and ongoing debates about identity can confuse individuals trying to find their place in these movements. The challenge is to find common ground and promote respectful discussions by encouraging healthy and mental wellness in the fight for social justice.
