Metacourses are Moodle classrooms in which students from multiple sections are enrolled. This allows faculty to use a single classroom for those classes they teach multiples sections. This page details how to create groups of students based on their section enrollments.

If, for example, I teach two sections of CIS 141, I can update the contents of the classroom for all students, but I can assign different quizzes to the different sections, or I can restrict access to forums or other materials based on the section in which the students are enrolled.

To create groups based on section enrollment:

1) Enter the  meta course

2) Under the gear menu, click "More"

3) On the "Course administration" page, click "Users" tab,

4) Under "Enrollment methods" you will see a "Meta course link..." for each section that has been added to the meta course

5) For each meta course link, click the link, then "Add to group"

6) Most will want to "Create a new group," so that all of those students are together, but you may also add students to existing groups.

To restrict access to materials:

1) "Add activity or resource" to create any forum, page, assignment or other item

2) Expand "Restrict access," and click "Add restriction..."

3) Click "Group," then select the group from the list

4) Save the changes
