After you have been accepted to GCC, submitted your transcripts, and completed placement testing, you'll meet with an Academic Advisor in a one-on-one meeting.  Meetings are typically scheduled for 45 minutes (but often are shorter).  Advisors are available to meet on GCC Campus, on Zoom, over the phone, or via email.

Before your appointment, be sure to:

  • Complete any admissions checklist items, such as placement testing or submitting transcripts
  • Put your appointment time in a calendar and set a reminder so that you do not miss your appointment
  • Review the information about your degree or certificate program on our website including the number of credits, career outcomes, and academic program
  • Think about how much time you have available in your week for school.  Consider the number of hours you work, if you have a commute, and any other responsibilities you have (such as caregiving)
  • Look through the class schedule for the upcoming semester

During your Advising Appointment, your advisor will:

  • Get to know you
  • Discuss your academic interests and experiences in the past
  • Discuss academic, transfer and career goals
  • Review college policies and procedures
  • Ensure access to all digital systems at GCC
  • Help you register for classes
  • Discuss your work habits and ask where you may need extra support
  • Answer any questions you have

After your Advising Appointment

  • Your advisor will send you an email with a review of the meeting and any follow up tasks
  • It's important that you read and save this email, to refer back to when you have questions and to find important links.
  • Your advisor will make notes in your Navigate360 profile regarding your registration, progress, and goals.
