Academic Standing Categories:

Good Standing:

  • Students affected: Students with a cumulative and term GPA of 2.00 or higher are in good standing.
  • Impact: Students must be in good standing to graduate.
  • Recommendation/Requirement: No particular action is required.
Academic Review:

  • Students affected: Students with a cumulative or term GPA under 2.00, or who have both a cumulative and term GPA under 2.00 and were not previously on Academic Review are placed on Academic Review.
  • Impact: This is the first level of warning of academic difficulty. Eligibility for financial aid and scholarships may be affected. Please refer to the Financial Aid and Standards of Satisfactory Academic Progress section in the catalog
  • Recommendation/Requirement: We recommend meeting with a success coach in the Advising Center to assess your status and create a success plan. Students may want to reduce their academic work load, work hours, and/or co-curricular activities. Students will be referred to campus and community resources as needed.
Academic Probation:

  • Students affected: Both a cumulative and a term GPA under 2.00 and previously on Academic Review.
  • Impact: Second level of academic difficulty. Eligibility for financial aid and scholarships is affected.
  • Recommendation/Requirement: Students must meet with their assigned success coach regularly. We advise reducing your academic work load, work hours, and/or co-curricular activities.
Academic Suspension: 

  • Students afected: Both a cumulative and a term GPA under 2.00 and previously on Academic Probation.
  • Impact: Precluded from enrollment for one full fall or spring term. In the case of academic suspension from spring grades, students will not be withdrawn from summer 1 classes, but will be withdrawn from summer 2. Students attending GCC on an F-1 Visa must contact the International Student Advisor. 
  • Recommendation/Requirement: Following a full semester break students can appeal to the Director of Advising (or designees) for reinstatement for readmission. Please learn more about academic standing appeals here.
Academic Probation Continued:

  • Students affected: This status is used for students returning from academic suspension.
  • Impact: There is no particular impact.
  • Recommendation/Requirement: The requirements are specific to each student and are outlined in the email granting their appeal.
Academic Dismissal:

  • Students afffected: Both a cumulative and a term GPA under 2.00, and a cumulative GPA lower than the previous term, and previously on academic suspension.
  • Imapct: Precluded from future enrollment.
