In the 1950s, public spaces became very important for the feminist and LGBTQ+ movements. During World War II, with many men away, women took jobs and became more visible in public life. Some LGBTQ+ people also felt freer to be themselves. This helped both groups find each other and start to organize. After the war, the government wanted things to go back to “normal” and women were told to return home, and an Executive Order banned queer people from government jobs. But people had already experienced more freedom, and they didn’t want to give it up. So, they started meeting in public places like cafes, parks, and bars to talk, plan, and protest. These shared spaces helped build strong communities and made the early feminist and LGBTQ+ movements possible.
