In this module, we examine the rise of the modern feminist movement and the emergence of the LGBTQ+ national movement. Both of these movements are launched during World War II when millions of men were off at war. With a lessening of the patriarchy, other groups emerged in public spaces and were able to begin to organize publicly.
Upon return, the traditional powers called for women to return to the household. There was also an Executive Order to remove queer people from government jobs. In the wake of these new restrictive pressures, various movements begin to emerge. (Keep in mind that the Montgomery Bus Boycotts were also under way in the 1955.)
Explain how public space played a role in the rise of the feminist and LGBT Movements in the 1950s.
