It has always been during problematic times in history when women have gained more power (Gatt). During World War II, women were pulled in to work in factories while men were away at war. When the men came back, eighty percent of the women in the working force wanted to remain with their jobs. Whithin days of the war ending, there was mass firing of women and an attempt to get them back into the home. Media, television shows, commercials tried to make them think this was the ideal way of life. Following such instability, the family felt like security and safety (Women and Work). Women who kept work started to receive criticim, being called man-hating and unlovely. Rigid gender roles became advertised as the norm. What is called the second wave of feminism began in the 1960s (Grady). The criticims and emphasis on women in the workforce verses women staying home brough questions from women who were being told they were broken if this was not what they desired. The Feminine Mystique began to make it’s rounds through women, and as more saw these ideas the more upset they became. With this came a fight for equal pay, the right to use birth control whether or not one was married, and reproductive freedom.
