I feel that it's important to go over all of the details of this war to really just attempt to understand these numbers and why they were all fighting for this war. The reconstruction era during 1865 was the first attempt of trying to rebuild the country and make up for all of the damage that had come from the last couple of years in the U.S. The country needed to go through this era because without it the different states would still be conflicting with each other and certain acts such as the abolishment of slavery would have been an act that would have stirred conflict between differing states.
The civil war was a giant catastrophe for the whole country and was a conflict that caused many hundreds of deaths and one thing we must recognize before moving away to a better era is why the conflict even began. It was estimated that roughly “one in eight (White) men of military age died during the war” (M. Wills ‘An End to All Hell’ 2015). For many decades before the war, our country had been divided by many conflicts, a prime example of a conflict from that era would be the abolishment of slavery. This was a conflict that ended up dividing many states and led to our entire country having to pick sides which was one of the driving factors that led to the civil war. The war was fought with passion from both sides as each one had their own beliefs and ways of thinking which may be the reason why it was one of the bloodiest in our history.
The reconstruction era is one where the thing we should consider most is how we can shape our country into a better place to avoid these conflicts. The most important step when going into the reconstruction era is to consider the conflicts over the past few decades and see the patterns that ended up leading to this war.
