I appreciate the focus you have taken here on the importance of slavery in the road to civil war. You mention the Fugitive Slave Act. I want to emphasize here another important factor, which was the ongoing debate about federalism, which is the balance of power between the federal and state governments. The expanded protections for slave state interests presented in the 1850 changes to the Fugitive Slave Act, as well as the 1857 Supreme Court decision in Scott v. Sandford indicated a rising concern in the Northern states that Southern interests were taking a central role in the federal government. This is an important point to remember as we continue through this class.
