The 1960s were a time when many people stood up against unfair systems. African Americans led the civil rights movement to fight racism and demand equal rights. Students, like those in the Student Democratic Society, protested for more say in politics and school decisions. Others protested the Vietnam War because they didn’t think it was fair or right. Some groups, like the free love movement, wanted more freedom in how people lived, loved, and expressed themselves. People from different backgrounds came together to challenge the idea of the “American Dream” that only worked for some. Today, we see some of the same things happening. People are still protesting racism, unfair treatment, climate change, and more. Like the 1960s, young people and students are often leading the way. Social media helps people organize faster now, but back then, people used word of mouth, flyers, and meetings. One big difference is that today we talk more about mental health, gender identity, and intersectionality. Still, both then and now, people want fairness, freedom, and a better future.
