In our last module, we examined the ways in which women and LGBT groups were able to take advantage of the public space that was created when so many of the country's men went off to war. Upon return, pressure was placed upon these two groups as "traditional" powers sought to reassert the previous social, economic, and political power structures. In this module, we examine the continued rising wave of discontent and resistance to the "American Dream" that characterized the 1960s.
For our discussion, consider the various causes and contexts for the social protests of the 1960s. Consider the modern African American civil rights movement, but also reflect on the Student Democratic Society, the Anti-war protests, the free love protests. This was a moment where all kinds of people organized and protested together.
It seems that we might be living through another moment where we, as a class, are organizing. Do you see any similarities? What differences do you see? Context matters here so contextualize both your reflection on the 1960s and our current environment.
