Before learning about the 1865 Reconstruction Era, it is important to understand all of the things that led up to that moment in history happening. Before the Reconstruction Era, America had just been through 4 years of intense civil war. (1861-1865) The article 'An End To All Hell: 150th Anniversary Of The Civil War's End' reads, "It was the bloodiest conflict in American history, with an estimated 1.5 million casualties. Of these, some 620,000 were fatalities (compare with 405,000 in WWII, the second bloodiest)." (Wills)
The movie ‘The Cause’ Talks about how the Civil War was fought in 10,000 different places including New Mexico, Tennessee, Vermont, Florida etc.
This Civil War caused a significant amount of deaths, illness' and injuries that will forever haunt this land and the people. It also caused stress on the economy of the South as slavery was what they relied on for labor, but the North had industrialized and moved away from slavery. The Civil War was mostly a fight over slavery and slaves rights between the North and the South. With the North wanting to abolish slavery and the South wanting to preserve it. It was a very important time in history. The article ‘Abraham Lincoln Papers At The Library Of Congress.’ says, “The Emancipation Proclamation and Thirteenth Amendment brought about by the Civil War were important milestones in the long process of ending legal slavery in the United States.” (Library of Congress)
In 1863 President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared enslaved people in confederate states free. Yet, In the movie "The Cause” when the Civil War began and slaves fled their plantations, Linocoln ordered the army to return ‘fugitives’ to their owners. “He also worried about the reactions of those in the loyal border states where slavery was still legal.” (Library of Congress)
When the war ended the country was faced with rebuilding the south, integrating newly free african american slaves into society and working with an extremely divided nation (which we still struggle with). This past information helps provide context on the importance and difficult period of the Reconstruction Era.
