Course Description
This two-hour-over-two-days workshop will include content to familiarize student learners with online learning technology. Content will include information about GCC?s online learning management system, Moodle, and how to navigate the dashboard and other course content. There will be exercises included to demonstrate how to download course assignments, how to upload assignments students are turning in, and how to actively participate in a discussion board thread. Course content will also address the various video conferencing platforms more commonly used by faculty in order to help familiarize students with their usage. All of the learning will be hands-on, experientially-based application of the course content. Students will gain experience in working with online technology for remote learning by completing course exercises and assignments that will be applicable to their remote learning experiences.
The course will be segmented into modules that build both skills and confidence in students? abilities to navigate through the various platforms. Proficiency will not be expected, as it becomes abundantly clear with all of technology that it remains an on-going learning experience. Dizzy Gillespie said, ?A musician never really knows their instrument, they are constantly relearning it,? and that is true of online technology as well. Students are not expected to master these skills, but they should anticipate learning the skills necessary to be able to navigate themselves through the various platforms. What learning technology teaches us is how to learn, especially in reverse-engineering and troubleshooting, two essential skills for the twenty-first century. The technology is not the content but a way to access the content, just as a book is not the content for learning but merely the delivery system for the content to be learned. This workshop will assist students in accessing the various delivery systems for the content in their online learning.
In addition to working directly with online tools and technology, students will also explore other aspects of remote learning, such as recognizing and identifying general technology needs for online learning, general tips for organizing work space conducive for productivity, organizing tasks and time management, and understanding the differences between remote learning and face-to-face instruction. Students will gain an understanding of the differences in learning expectations and ways to best adapt for continued success.
